Going From Coast(ers) to Coast(ers)

Our latest DIY project was once again inspired by Our Nerd Home. This time we thought we’d try our hand at making coasters. We decided to change up the materials used based on some other articles we read online. Instead of using square tiles, we used round electrical blanks. We liked the look of round vs square and found that the blanks came with foam rings that worked great at bottoms for the coasters.

We ended up making three sets of six coasters: one set for my SIL’s birthday, one set for my co-workers, and one for our own house. The birthday ones we used Disney cats, favorite book quotes for our house, and favorite geekdoms for my co-workers. We printed out photos from Fedex, traced them to cut, and then used the all powerful Mod Podge to adhere the images and blanks together. A little superglue for the foam back and 2 days of setting and we were in business.

The coasters came out looking great. The round image really added some character the images, something to do with the curve lines. The edges were cut a little rough (have to figure out how to get better at that) and some of the coasters ended up being a little sticky for a while after we thought they were done (hello cat hair all over our home coasters!) but other than that, they look and feel great.
